All cats, from cute little cuddly kittens to the fierce jungle tigers, are a bundle of high tension muscles ready to spring into action. Cat toys can help funnel this energy into positive activity. In purchasing cat toys, it is important to understand the nature of the cat. He is a scratching, leaping, exploring, animal designed by nature to hunt. Because a cat’s interests are individual, cat owners should carefully select cat toys which interest his cat. In this cat toy selection it is important to understand that cats thrive on random stimulation. Rotating old cat toys and buying new cat toys keep cats from getting bored or depressed. With careful selection of cat toys, cat owners can be creative in creating a cat toy inventory.

Cat toys:
Scratching and exploring toys

Cats scratch because they are marking their territory with the scent glands in their paw pads. This says to other cats – “This is mine”. Scratching may also relieve tension or stress. A cat condo is a perfect example of a scratchy tree-like cat toy which keeps the cat happy and the furniture whole. To be an effective cat toy, a good cat condo needs to be tall enough for the cat to reach full length and sturdy enough that it won’t tip over as he scratches. To protect furniture, cat owners may need to have several cat condos placed strategically by couches or other furniture. A card board scratcher with cat nip is also an excellent cat toy for scratchers!

Cat tunnels are wonderful cat toys for exploring and hiding. Adding a kitty cubby hole to the cat toy collection will create a stimulating environment for play, exercise and naps. Cardboard boxes also make great cat toys and provide a feline ‘get away’. Best of all, they are an excellent recyclable cat toy.

Cat toys :
hunting

Cats were born to hunt. Cat toys that simulate birds, mice or even frogs can be interesting and keep cats from terrorizing the ‘real’ ones. Cat toys that are motorized make a challenging hunting experience.

Cat toys:
leaping toys

Cat toys which encourage jumping keep his cardiovascular and muscle systems exercised and healthy. A laser, designed as a cat toy, is one cat toy that is easy on the owner and energizing to the cat! String cat toys are also an exuberating exercise as the cat leaps through the air to catch the little cat toy on the end of the string.

Cat toys :
chasing toys

Balls are great cat toys for chasers. Some cats even learn to ‘retrieve’ their balls so the owner can make them ‘run’ again. Fast moving cat toys give your cat the thrill of the chase!

Cat toys that stimulate the senses:

Cat toys filled catnip cause sheer ecstasy in cats. Catnip is a very fun, safe and natural cat toy. Cats rub and roll on their catnip filled cat toys! The effect of the catnip on the feline brain is short lived; but don’t worry, in a couple of hours they are back for another intoxicating ‘rub’ on their cat toy.

Remember your cat’s preferences in cat toys are individual. He loves random stimulation and needs exercise. Rotate cat toys and buy new cat toys often to keep him alert and active. With careful selection of cat toys, cat owners can be creative in making a delightful cat toy inventory.
