All you need is five cups of sesame seeds and one and a half cups of olive oil (since tahini is bitter tasting, you can add a quarter cup of sugar for sweetness). Layer sesame seeds on a baking sheet and toast for 5 to 10 minutes in the oven at 350 degrees, shaking seeds frequently with a spatula (don�t allow to brown). Cool for 20 minutes, and then pour the seeds into the food processor, add oil and blend for two minutes, checking for consistency (at this point, add sugar if sweetness is desired). You want a thick, yet pourable texture, so add more oil and blend until preferred consistency is achieved. When ready, transfer into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator. Spread some tahini and strawberry jam on some toasted wheat bread, and you�ll have yourself a yummy and healthy snack. Presto Basil Pesto Looking to add some panache to your pasta? Then this presto basil pesto recipe is the way to go and only takes 10 minutes to make. All you need is one small garlic clove, a third cup of toasted pine nuts (while pine nuts are used in most pesto, they are optional ingredient, and should not be added if you�re allergic to nuts), one and a quarter cup of fresh basil, a quarter cup of extra virgin olive oil, one tablespoon of softened butter, one cup of grated parmesan cheese, and some salt and pepper. Place pine nuts and garlic together in the processor and pulse until nuts are finely chopped, and then add basil and process until the leaves are finely chopped. While the processor is running, pour in a steady stream of olive oil (some processors have a feed tube with a special �pinhole� for this purpose, so use it now if yours does), and then stop the processor to add the butter and cheese. Process the butter and parmesan until they�re completely blended into the mixture and the sauce is paste-like (season with pepper and salt to taste). Heat up your pesto over the stove if you want to serve it warm. Pour this delicious sauce over some angel hair spaghetti and you�ll have yourself a tasty Italian meal. They each had a couple of night time accidents and we had a few more sheet changes with our son, but overall a less traumatic experience that I was bracing myself for. We did the following with our kids. Try these tips out and hopefully they�ll work for you. 1. Observe the signs. If your child is waking up dry from nap or night for at least a couple of weeks that is a big clue to start potty training. There are so many reasons to �ignore� or not want to �see� the signs that having your spouse, close friend or in our case a pre-school teacher throw some cold water in your face can really help. I was 8 months pregnant when our son�s pre-school teacher said you MUST potty train now. I was thinking to myself �are you crazy woman?! I can barely pick myself up let alone a toddler onto a potty.� I figured I�d wait until after the baby was born. I had been picking him up from pre-school and putting on a diaper/pull-up because I didn�t want to be unnecessarily cleaning a car seat. After being sternly warned by the teacher not to do that, I ended up putting a towel down on his car seat just in case. 2. Be consistent. When you are potty training make sure to take your toddler to the potty at least every 2 to 3 hours during the day. After a few weeks you�ll start to see the time between potty visits diminish. We observed that most accidents happened if we had forgotten to take them to the potty or were afraid to take them to the potty when they were in the middle of doing fun stuff for fear of the inevitable kicking and screaming. 3. Morning and Night. As soon as they wake up (even if it�s the crack of dawn and you�d much rather scream out loud than take them to the potty) put them on the potty. Even if they refuse to go, this will get them associating morning time with potty time and show them it�s OK to get up to go to the potty than to wet the bed. The same goes for night time. Put them on the potty right before going to bed so they create the same night time association as well. 4. Read a designated potty book. One of the things that worked really well for us with our son was identifying a potty book. I actually got this tip from Keys to Toilet Training by Meg Zwieback. Every night when we put him on the potty, we would read the same book to him. Since he was (and still is) so active, getting him to sit on the potty for any length of time was challenging. He liked reading the �potty book� and because he sat longer he more often than not used the potty! This technique didn�t work so well with our daughter because she was fairly quick in going so she didn�t need to be entertained for long. Must be a girl thing (i.e., we�re less inclined to read newspapers and magazines while sitting on the toilet than guys are!) 5. Encourage and Reward. It is so important that you encourage and reward your toddler for going to the potty. You can do this with hugs, creating a chart, treats, activities, toys, etc. With our kids we used a chart that we would put smiley faces on when they went to the potty and sad faces if they had an accident. The chart gave them a visual to see how they were progressing and the act of us drawing a smiley face would make them so proud and happy! We also hugged them, gave them high 5�s, clapped, and sometimes gave them a Gerber fruit snack treat. When they went several days in a row without an accident, they would get to do something fun, get a treat, or better yet chose their own Spiderman or Dora the Explorer underwear! Poetic magic of the Palekh characters, decorativeness of landscapes and architecture, and elongated proportions of the figures go back to the icon-painting traditions. The miniatures are usually set off with a complicated pattern made with gold dissolved in aqua regia. Palekh lacquer miniatures are painted on articles - caskets and boxes, brooches and hairpins for ties, a panel and ashtrays and great number of other little things made of papier-mache. The process of making Palekh articles is the following: The first operation in the making of these gems of folk art is the cutting out of the cardboard. The strips of cardboard are covered with flour paste, placed on circular or rectangular moulds and pressed. After that the material is given a coating of warm linseed oil. The carefully checked pieces are handed to the joiners. Then the undercoat is applied to the article with a steel palette knife. The outside of Palekh articles is painted with black lacquer. The inside is painted with red lacquer. The final operation before painting: about seven coats of transparent oil varnish is applied to the outside and inside of the article. Every coat applied is dried in the furnace for 9 hours at 90�C. The articles are now ready to be handed to the artists. The work of the artist begins with preparation of the paint. In Palekh the paints are mixed with egg emulsion. The yolk, separated from the white, is returned to the shell where a mixture of water and vinegar is added. Then the emulsion is stirred with a special brush. Before painting the article, the artist draws on the design. Then the composition is outlined in white lead with a very fine squirrel brush and the colours are then applied in strict succession. The work of the miniature painter requires not only creative inspiration, but also extreme care and precision which is why Palekh painters frequently make use of a magnifying glass. When the painting is over, the artist begins the gold work. The gold must be polished to give it the necessary shine. After having signed the article the artist coats it by transparent oil varnish and polish by hand. Halloween bears its origin from the Irish and Scottish countries. Since then varieties of it have cropped up, nonetheless all of them with similar components: masks, costumes, parties, and the presence of mortality and death. The latter quality is what makes Halloween stand out from the other national American holidays: death. It is only appropriate, then, to disseminate it into all the qualities that make up our notions of Halloween. In the parable of 'The Two Teams' as in any sporting competition today there must be at least two players if not two teams. In order to be able to distinguish any two teams we usually implore the use of two different colored jerseys. So in our parable we also have two teams. One team is referred to as the home team with its distinguishing color being black. Our other team is referred to as the visitors and their distinguishing color is white. For the case of argument and because we all enjoy easy to understand analogies or stories, we will refer to our two teams as the dark team and the light team. As our story goes, the dark team looks to be a very powerful team. Many would say that the dark team is truly frightening because of how big and powerful they appear to be, as well as because they are so cocky acting all the time. The light team on the other hand appears to be a bunch of very happy and good natured people. The light team isn't as large as the dark team in appearance, and appears to allow just about anyone to join their team. Because of this fact the light team looks mismatched to say the least. On the other hand, the light team seems to support each other and truly cares about everyone on their team. From the best player to the 'not as good' player the light team values them all, just the same. Now critics of the light team declare that their 'valuing of all' must be fake and just a clever attempt to cover up some wrong doing. These accusations don't seem to bother the light team either way. Unfortunately though, the light team hasn't won any of their recent contests and the critics claim that it supports and proves the truth of their accusations. The light team is in a no-win situation, with the critics and so accepts the insults of being 'big losers', graciously. The dark team on the other hand has won a lot of the recent contests and seems virtually unbeatable. The dark team struts around shouting and grunting loudly to show how tough they are and to intimidate others. Many have heard from the mouths of the dark team just how much money they have and how little everyone else has. They call themselves successful, and claim to have 'made it�. In our parable, our two teams have fans or supporters just as any other team usually have. The only difference between the supporters of our teams and the average supporter is that the supporters of our two teams appear to be exactly, as if 'carbon copies' of the team they support. With this difference we have the night-and-day difference of the two team�s supporters. The supporters of the dark team are rude, crude and completely obnoxious. These supporters greatly favor all things dark, gloomy and gruesome. As if this wasn't enough they implore anything shocking and demented in an attempt to intimidate. The light team's supporters are good-natured, gracious and usually well groomed. As you can see, the differences are truly polarized. This polarization continues into the game our two teams play. The game is intricate and very complex on the one hand; yet on the other hand it has easy to understand objectives, that once fully understood, are not so complex or difficult. However, because the game has an over all complex theme, the dark team along with their supporters, attempt to always 'cloud the issues' and reverse the objectives in hopes of throwing the light team into total confusion and dismay. This forces the light team's coaches to spend most of their time explaining and re-explaining the simple objectives of the game, in an attempt to help re-focus the light team as to, what is truly important. With all the polarization and differences happening in our parable, remember that rarely does someone, not know which team a supporter, supports. Yes, of course, there are and will continue to be exceptions to the rule. However, when trying to understand the 'big picture', rarely do we ever want to consider the exceptions. Taking notice of another's actions and method of dress will usually point one in the right direction and solve most conflicts of interests. After years of expanding the limits of acceptable behavior and mode of dress, the dark team and their supporters have recruited more youngsters. The dark team and their supporters can be heard claiming that they and their supporters have 'way more fun'. They don't want to be a 'goody-two-shoes' or a square prude like the light team and their supporters. However, these accusations will not move a single light team or any of their supporters to expand their limits of propriety. Their collective rebuttal is 'prudence not prudish'. By now, most people, I am certain, have come to understand my parable and have begun to make the connections that the dark team and their supporters represent Satan, the world and everything evil. The light team is Jesus, the Eternal Father, The Holy Spirit and all Christians. In the parable, the game that the two teams play has also been called, 'The Game of Life'. Complicated but not truly hard to know what's truly important. So what else then can be gleaned from our parable? One of the biggest points I had hoped you get out of the parable is that as wrong as it would be for a light team supporter to wear the 'colors' of the dark team in our parable; the same applies to the 'real' world with regards to a Denver Bronco's fan wearing a Los Angeles Raiders jersey, it just isn't done! That's silly you say! Yes, it is and when you think about it for a moment and allow it to sink in, then connect the dots and see that it is as dopey for a Christian to dress up as a devil or demon for Halloween! It just shouldn't be done. Secondly, just as it would be dumb to say that in our parable the dark team and its supporters really don't exist! Of course they do and of course there is a real Satan and a lot of satanic supporters loafing around looking for people to mess with! When someone claims they don't exist they love it! That way they can 'fly under the radar', so to speak! Don't go blaming every little thing that goes wrong on them because it makes you look foolish. Just knowing that they exist and are present most places is enough for any of us to worry about. Thirdly, I had hoped you would see the reason behind not allowing the dark team or its supporter to ever intimidate or frighten you! They have absolutely no power over you as a Christian-truly! Let them say what they may. Allow them to come up with fake controversies and trumped up stories based on misunderstandings. Additionally as a Christian tell everyone you know and help to get the word out, that Christianity is about what Jesus did for us and nothing to do with how holy we are or will ever be! Of course there will be Christians that do wrongs! Unfortunately, as humans it's just our way. If you understand that �they� are out there just waiting for you to do something to make Christianity or the Church look bad-please don't do it! Hopefully being mindful of this will help us in not giving the other side any more ammunition. Lastly, we must remind ourselves daily that the fight is over, the battle has been won. We are on the winning teams� side! Jesus beat the devil, death and hell! Yes there is sin and those bad guys are still around, it just means they are angry and looking for just about anyone to share their defeat and a spot in hell with them! Soon their time will be up and Jesus will reign as King everlastingly.
